Welcome to a new year of One Little Word blog hopping hosted by Margie who has also created the above new button. (Have you grabbed yours yet?)
For those of you not familiar with One Little Word (OLW), it’s is a class being run by Ali Edwards at Big Picture Classes. My One Little Word for 2012 is Home. (All posts on my OLW for 2011 and 2012 can be found here.)
Last year my word was Create, and boy did I spend a lot of time (and $) creating and learning so many new things. This year I’m focusing on the Home… my house and family.
My pre-class title page:
In 2011 we went though a rough patch and the photo below that I’m using for January was taken on our 15th wedding anniversary, at a time when I was really unsure of our future. Thankfully we are working through it, but this was a real turning point where I realized that I needed to do more (as we both do) to make our house a home. We worked hard to build it. Now was the time to nurture it.
I’ll be spending this year working on unpacking the last of our boxes from our move 2 years ago, and decluttering what’s in the boxes as well as the stuff that is starting to accumulate. I’ve worked out a plan where I’ll spend each month concentrating specifically on one room, decorating, adding display areas/shelves, putting pictures on the walls.
January was the month for Grace’s bedroom. We purchase a new desk for her which meant we had to rearrange her room a bit, and also a small bookcase with baskets for her bits and pieces. She wouldn’t let me do much more that that… being a 13 yo… so it was left to her to sort through her clothes and donate those that she had grown out of. February is the time to work on our bedroom.
To me Home is also about family and the people you love. The ones you want to come home to. January is school holiday time here so DH and I both took time off work and we went down the coast for a holiday. It was good to just get away. Funny how being away from our house made me feel more at Home.
Above are my 9 canvases which helped me define my word and why I chose it. The quote really hit Home with me.
“A house is made of walls and beams
A home is built with love and dreams”
~ unknown
When I think of a home I often think of the fantastic Australian movie “The Castle”, especially this scene and in particular Darryl Kerrigan’s lines at 4:05
Classic stuff!
I’m looking forward to what February will bring.
Thanks for stopping by my place.
Next on the list is Monica so hop on over and check out her One Little Word. There are more fabulous people participating in this blog hop which commences at 8am PST (Pacific Standard Time). They are listed below if you would like to start from the beginning… See you all again next time !

really love your intro page – looking forward to following your journey!
Thanks Katrina
nice work this month! i love your self-portrait, great smile. xoxo
Thanks Jenn. I hate the bags under my eyes
Great word and your intro page to it looks amazing!
Thank you Ruth
Inspiring post…I think we all could focus a little more on our home and family so I’ll be looking forward to future posts from you. I think I commented in the gallery on your title page – it just caught my eye as soon as the page loaded – I really like your choice of colors.
Thanks Lynn. I’m using up my stash of Cherry Delicious by Sassafras for OLW this year.
Great choice of word – and I hope it helps you in creating the home that you want. I’m sure it will. Your canvases are beautiful! By the way, I chose “create” as my word this year! Doesn’t that mean I’ll automatically have more time to create? Hmmmm. Workin’ on it!
Blessings as you make your house a home…
Thanks Jan. Create is such a fun word. And I can continue to create this year for our home.
Home is where your heart is…one of my favorite quotes. Enjoy the journey with your new OLW this year!
Thanks Rebekah. My first thought was that quote too.
I too used create last year and it was profound for me. I love your new word and your page is beautiful. Glad to hear things are good in your home, it is the nexus of life.
Thanks Cynthia. I think it will be a constant work in progress but it will be good to have it as my main focus.
Such a sincere heart felt post. It’s so true about cherishing our home. The important things in life, are not things. They are the people who love us. Our home is meant to reflect that. My word “Dwell” is similar in many ways. I love your canvases.
Thanks Donna. So true too. Especially in this age of technology where each can be ‘busy’ doing their own thing.
SAM! So glad you’re back on the hop this year
I found myself rooting for you as I read your post, and I admire your honesty and how hard you are working to nurture your home and your family. Much love headed your way.
Thank you Lisa. It will be a long process but one I’m determined to work on.
A very worthy word…may you be blessed through this journey.
Thank you
This is so wonderful! I am going to try to figure out how to put that home quotation on a wall in my own home. It really is true that it’s a constant work, not just a one-time thing, with a home or with a marriage.
Thanks Naomi. It really resonated with me as we built our house 2 years ago but we are still building our home.
Glad you are concentrating on your home and realized you need to. Always hard to do that! Enjoy this month of working on your bedroom – may it be a place of solace and peace for you both.
Thanks Missus Wookie. That is the plan
Thanks for sharing your word. As someone who moved in July, I’m still living among piles of boxes and books in my small apartment. I can totally understand the need to make the house a home (or in my case, an apartment my home).
Thanks for sharing your journey.
I love your title page and your canvases. It was great to read all about your word and what you are hoping for in the upcoming year. It makes the word journey seem so powerful. It was fun to hear how well things went last year with your word, Create. Thanks for joining in on the blog hop!
